음양설은 우주나 인간의 분리된 모든 현상이 음陰과 양陽의 쌍으로 나타난다는 것이다.

위-아래, 높고-낮음, 여자-남자가 그러하다.

It is such as up-down, high-low, and female-male.

이들은 대립적이지만 서로 상보적이다.

They are opposing but complementary to each other.

음陰과 양陽이 확장하고 수축함에 따라 우주의 운행이 결정된다.

As Yin and Yang expand and contract, the operation of the universe is determined.

이와 함께 음과 양이 네가지 기운 즉 생, 노, 병, 사에 따라 확장-수축한다.

Along with this, yin and yang expand-contract according to the four auras: life, old age, sickness, and death.

이로써 오행이 나타난다.

So five elements appear.

이것이 오행설이다.

This is the five elements theory.

오행설은 금金, 수水, 목木, 화火, 토土의 다섯 가지가 음양의 원리에 따라 행한다.

Five elements are practiced according to the principles of yin and yang: gold, water, wood, fire, and earth.

이로써 우주의 만물이 생성하고 소멸하게 된다.

In this way, everything in the universe is created and destroyed.

금金은 목木을, 목木은 토土를, 토土는 수水를, 수水는 화火를, 화火는 금金을 각각 이긴다.

Gold wins wood, wood wins soil, soil wins water, water wins fire, and fire wins gold each.

이를 오행상극이라고 한다.

This is called the Five Elements Conflict.
